What Does It Mean to be Media Literate?

"A media-literate adult should be able to access, share and create media across multiple formats and platforms while using critical thinking skills to evaluate the purpose and potential impact of the material" (American Library Association, 2020).

Due to the constantly changing nature of information, media, and technology, individuals should never expect to master media literacy.  Instead, they should engage in lifelong learning and critical thinking about the role of media in their lives.

Media Literacy Skills to Learn and Practice

The Stanford History Education Group and MediaWise Initiative created a Civic Online Reasoning curriculum to teach students how to evaluate information online.  The media literacy skills included in this guide follow this curriculum.
